There are many steps to follow before you learn undertake any shade sail installation. However, after following these few steps, you will have no problem installing virtually any sun sail. Sunshades can provide tremendous benefits for those who use them. They can be used to cover just about anything including patios, car wash bays, walkways, smoking areas, or just about anything that you can imagine needing covering. Before you purchase a shade sail it is very important to know the installation process well. A consumer informed with good knowledge is less likely to be preyed upon by those unscrupulous companies who use less than desired installation procedures. Furthermore, you will have significant fewer problems should you decide to undertake this feat by yourself. Please read the following paragraphs carefully as there are many steps to take in order to properly install any sunshade system for your own or business.

The first thing to take into consideration is where you plan to install your sun sail. This will give you a much better idea as to how you will be doing the installation. You need to be sure and determine the best places for your fixing points. This can be done in a variety ways. You may be in an open field and be needing posts, or you may want to attach to the side of a building and or even a tree. Your fixing points can always be extended as well using additional steel cable. There different ways to install your sunshade no matter what your installation scenario may be.

There are those who may want to attach to the side of a house or building. This can be an excellent fixing point so long as you have a solid wall that can be used as attachment points. Look for a wooden stud as place to begin to looking for where you are going to attach. You can attach to house using different types of hardware. A sturdy eye-hook is a common method that many people use to attach to their homes. This solution can be easily screwed into your beam and will serve as an excellent fixing point. A pad eye is a similar type of connection point but should consist of a steel base plate with a ring that is welded onto it. The steel plate should also have 4 holes for you to screw onto any building facade. The pad-eye because of the additional screws is probably a much sturdier connection point. Either way, that is one of the best ways to attach to the side of any house or building.

Steel posts might also be needed if you do not have any other place to attach your shade sail. You can purchase the right steel from any local steel supplier. It is always important to use heavy-duty steel as opposed to lightweight. A shade sail post should be at least 4” in diameter with a significant wall thickness such as schedule 40 or 1/4”. The bigger your shade sail, the bigger you post should be. A 30′X30’30′ triangular shade sail should have at least 8” to 10” steel with a larger wall thickness as well. Sunshades will place tremendous tension on your posts. Furthermore, the wind loads exerted on a larger sail are much more powerful and can cause your steel to bend or even come out of the foundation completely.

The posts should also be submersed several feet or more into the ground in order to have a solid foundation. This can typically be determined by figuring out your walk through height and then dividing by three. Therefore, if your walk through is going to be 8 feet in height, you post should go a min of 2.66 feet into the ground. I would recommend that you use 4 feet as the correct depth to go by if you are wanting to stay within certain engineering parameters such as wind rating. We are not engineers nor do we make any claims that we are, however, experience has shown that such a depth will usually give you a 90 mph wind rating. However, certain areas will have different requirements and may require different depth footings. Coastal areas typically require a 120 mph wind rating in order to pass building codes. Always check with local building requirements before undertaking any shade sail installation venture. Once the size of the hole is determined than you will be ready to place you post into the ground. Be sure and have some sort of tie rods welded or attached to your sail posts. This will ensure that the concrete binds well with your support posts. Otherwise, you run the risk that your post can be pulled out of the concrete (usually by a wind force). If the tie rods are in place, than the post will bind correctly and secure itself properly. Your hole should also be at least 2 to 3 feet in diameter, depending on the size of your post. Large shade sail jobs will require holes that are large in diameter. Then you will need to pour cement into the hole once the post has been secured in place. A set of 2” X 4” plywood will come in handy when keeping your posts in place. Once you poles are in place you will be ready to pour the cement. 3500 Psi Portland cement is good to use as a minimum. However, if you are undertaking a large commercial or residential project, the structural engineer should be able to tell you exact dimensions as well as concrete strength requirements.

A tree can also be used as a fixing point. Preferably find a sturdy tree that you can attach your sun sail. Trees will work, however, they are not ideal for using as a fixing point. The disadvantage is that a tree will deflect, or bend inwards, quite a bit when applying any tension to your sails. Sails require a good amount of tension for them not to sag in the middle. In time, it is possible for the tree to break and fall. This would render your sunshade useless until you find another fixing point. There are also environmental issues to consider when installing your sun sail onto a tree. There is a good possibility that you may hurt the tree as well. Trees do make great temporary fixing points. Someone who is installing their sail on a camping trip might want to find a few good trees.

The right tools are also necessary to have when installing any permanent type sun sail set up. You will need a good ladder in order to get to the correct heights needed to reach to the top of your fixing points such as the roof line of your house or the top of a support post. It is also good to have an auger digging machine when you are installing posts into the ground. Home Depot rents a machine called a Dingo for a very good price. Around $300 a day will rent you the right machine needed to make your holes quickly and easily. A shovel will also do just fine for those of you looking to get in some exercise and/or save money. It is also important to keep in mind the type of terrain that you will be digging in. Certain terrains, such as rocks, can be notoriously treacherous to dig through. A turn key professional installation might charge more money if they encounter rocks when digging. Anyway, other tools needed will be a wheel barrow to move the dirt from one location to another, a water to mix your cement with, a bucket to mix cement in will also be needed. You many also opt to call a concrete company to come and pour your cement for you professionally. This will also save you a lot of time for those who are able to drive up with a cement truck. Some of you might not be as fortunate and need to mix everything by hand because equipment like that will not enter where you are doing your installation.

Lastly, you should plan your shade sail installation based on how you will be doing the installation. Be sure and look out for equipment access into the area that you will be doing the installation. Equipment will be hard to move around if you are installing in a backyard with limited gate access. An open field with some nice landscaping might be destroyed if you drive up a cement truck without putting some sort of impromptu track that the tires can go over without tearing up the grass. A few wooden boards will normally do this trick. Without the proper planning you will find your self doing more work than you set out to do. However, if all is planned well and surveyed in advance, your installation will go as smooth as glass!

How To Buy Patio Shade Sails

Patio shade sails are an excellent way to provide your home or business with shade coverage while adding an artistic flair to any outdoor setting. The advantage that patio shade sails pose is their ability to be arranged in a variety of manners. Patio shade sails are available in a variety of shapes such as triangular, square, rectangle, right and triangle as well as custom patio sails. If you are wanting to add an architectural flair to your home or business, than patio sails are definitely the way to go. Be sure to remember that not all patio shade sails are made equally. Patio sails, like most thing we buy, are only as good as the materials that the manufacture will use. Reinforced corners and webbing around the perimeter of the sail will provide additional benefits over non reinforced or non cabled sails. It is always best to make sure that your triangular shade sail has the following features to ensure longevity.

The weight of the material your patio shade sail is made from will affect its overall strength as well as lifespan. A variety of fabric types can be used to manufacture patio sun sails from. The most common fabrics used for patio sunshades is traditionally polyethylene shade cloth. Sunbrella canvas fabric is also becoming more popular to fabricate sunshades from as well. However, we will examine shade fabric for this example. The strength of the cloth is measure by its weight. Heavier shade fabrics will outlast lighter ones. Shade cloth weight is measured either by grams per square meter or by ounces for square meter. As mentioned, previously on this website, most shade fabrics are made overseas and therefore weight is measured in grams per square meter or also referred to as GSM. Lightweight fabrics can range in the 120 GSM area as opposed to heavy-duty fabrics that weigh in at 300 GSM or more. Coolaroo or Cooltrashade are good examples of heavy-duty fabrics that weight in the 300 range. A triangular shade sail made from a heavy weight cloth will definitely outlast other sunshades made from lighter materials. Sunbrella acrylic dyed fabric is also an excellent source for patio shade sails. Sunbrella fabric is the only water permeable fabric that will keep you dry as well as withstand the elements. Sunbrella waterproof fabric is not supposed to fade, rot, sag or mildew for at least 10 years.

If you live in a wind area it is of utmost importance to purchase a patio sun sail that has reinforced corners and a webbing along the perimeter. The reinforced corners will give your sunshades the additional durability that is needed in windy areas. Patio shade sail corners are typically reinforced with additional shade fabric as well as nylon seatbelt webbing. The first thing to come undone are your shade sail corners because of all the stress that the wind has on the material. Even heavy-duty fabric can get torn after time at the corners if they are not properly reinforced. Furthermore, a cable along the perimeter will provide your sail additional stability in windy situations as well. A well constructed, reinforced shade sail will last for many years to come, even in the windiest environments.

It is always extremely important to make sure that your patio shade is made with UV treated awning thread as well. Untreated thread will not last in the sun’s powerful UV rays. After time, thread that is not treated will just disintegrate and become no good, causing your triangular shade sail to fall apart. A particular brand, known as Tenara Gore Tex is considered to the best awning thread in the industry. This thread has been UV treated for a minimum lifetime of 8 years. Tenera will also warranty their thread for 8 years as well. Tenara Gore Tex is also the most expensive awning thread that you can purchase. It is called for by spec in many high dollar budget shade sail or shade structure projects. Make sure that whomever, you purchase your triangular shade sail uses Tenara Gore Tex or your going to have problems.
